Joyful Song: A Naming Story by Lesléa Newman

Zachary is even more excited than usual for Shabbat, because it's his new baby sister's very first one, and also her naming ceremony. On the walk to synagogue, neighbors coo over the baby and ask her name, but Zachary's mothers remind him not to reveal it yet. Instead, he invites them along to the naming ceremony. Afterward, everyone celebrates with a meal and says "mazel tov."

Rich watercolors with layered painted textures and pencil drawings make for a warm and vibrant tone to match the joyful occasion.

Author's note describes naming traditions and concludes, "Everybody's name has an interesting story. What's the story of yours?"… (more)
