About the Author
Ursula Vernon is a freelance writer, artist and illustrator. She received an undergraduate degree in anthropology at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She took several art classes in college. Her first children's book, Nurk: The Strange Surprising Adventures of a (Somewhat) Brave Shrew, show more was published in 2008. Her other works include Black Dogs: The House of Diamond and the Dragonbreath series. She also writes and illustrates the webcomic Digger and the creator of The Biting Pear of Salamanca. This is not about Alien Abduction, do not let people tell you otherwise.
I can’t believe this is the same author as nettle and bone - such very different books.
This was fun- a mystery, likeable characters, some romance and hijinks. I was entertained. Kinda wish nettle and bone had a bit more steam now that I know she can definitely write some spice.
I was more interested in the magical aspects like the killing of their saint rather than murder mystery though but I feel it might be going more towards the magic aspect considering what the murders were made out of

So this has something that frustrates me to no end.
The main character has VITAL information but chooses not to share it with her family , even when they ask her if she’s knows anything, until things reach catastrophic levels. I hate that as a plot device. I’m just screaming “TELL THEM!!”
Also, first time I’ve ever disliked a crow character, sad day for me.

This is a lovely reworking of the Sleeping Beauty story, from a very non-traditional viewpoint -- Toadling, the fae who curses the princess.
This is a very non-linear narrative, but it doesn't feel that way, because it is skilfully woven together from tales told around the fire, and memory, and other ways of slotting information in for the reader. Kingfisher, in the afterword, describes this as sweet, and I think that is as good a word as any, about a very long lived individual protecting a secret, and surviving alone, sacrificing pretty much anything. And then about how that sacrifice comes to an end.… (more)
