Enjoyable thriller by Simon Kernick, rather signposted the twist i felt, but Ray Mason is a man who seems to live a charmed life and despite the high body count manages to survive the various mass shootings. The Jane Kinnear character is very intriguing and mysterious but you felt there was going to be more to her than first met the eye and there was.

i have read other Simon Kernick books and really really enjoyed Relentless but this was the first Ray Mason book i had read. I think the next one in the series is called The Bone Field and I shall be reading that at some point.

Two books read this week, starting a new one today. ( )

Once a leading light in the new wave of British crime writers, Simon Kernick did not live up to his early promise and his intelligent and taut thrillers degenerated into predictable schlock.

However, a good writer – no matter how sloppy – can still rise to the occasion, and The Witness is one of these risings. Independently rich maverick DI Ray Mason of the Counter Terrorism Command is targeted by assassin-for-hire The Wraith.

Meanwhile South African Jane Kinnear is in a safe house after police learn she was the only witness to her lover and his wife being tortured to death. Twists, red herrings, and nail-biting suspense. ( )
