From Amazon: Grade 2-4-A story about learning to share, conquering fears, and making new friends. When Holly's mom marries William, the third grader's life turns dramatically. She moves from their house in San Francisco to an apartment and has to attend a new school, make new friends, and learn to live with her stepfather's four "stupid and annoying" felines that chew her socks and barf on her pillow. Freeman's realistic story is filled with incidents in which the protagonist makes adjustments common to many youngsters. She forgets her math homework, gets scared on a high slide in the school playground, misses her best friend, and runs away after a disagreement with William. Yet with all the conflicts in her life, there is a happy ending: Holly's new teacher is understanding; her parents are relieved and empathetic when she returns home; and her new classmates can't wait to meet her crazy cats. The excellent plot development and characterization make this a good choice for beginning chapter-book readers, who will also enjoy Smith's humorous black-and-white sketches.
