Gilder taught a year abroad in Slovakia just before its split with the Czech Republic. A very interesting look into the lives of people living in the post-Soviet bloc. I'm sure the side trip to Poland is of interest to readers of his earlier works about his grandfather, but I didn't find it very interesting.
