Quite dreadful. Nearly every story is supposed to be comic. Nerd humor, in short. A gorilla tries to get a job playing a gorilla in a Dorothy Lamour movie, that kind of thing. Embarassing efforts from such worthies as Shirley Jackson, Fritz Lieber, C.S. Lewis, and others. Even the most stylish sophisticate farts in public now and then, I guess. Only Alfred Bester contributes something really worth reading. ( )

Terrific collection of stories from the end of 50's with so many bright spots it's hard to pick a favourite story. I decided on Kit Reed's The Wait eventually though. Apparently her first published work (!) this gem was chilling and startling beyond any expectations I had. Brian W. Aldiss's Poor Little Warrior! crammed whole novels of ideas into each sentence making for an unbelievably dense story that kept me enthralled for several back to back readings. In fact, out of all the offerings only one didn't satisfy, a very satisfying ratio considering the book was 50 years old. ( )
